Why is isopropyl alcohol (isopropanol) added to ethanol for bactericidal and virucidal gels, considering that while 70% ethanol is optimal for intact skin and effective against various bacteria, fungi, and enveloped viruses (like HIV and HBV) due to their fatty envelopes, it is less effective against non-enveloped viruses, ineffective against spores, and loses bactericidal properties below 50%, leading to the recommendation of higher concentration mixtures such as 80% ethanol with 5% isopropanol for better inactivation of enveloped viruses?

For this preparation, 70° ethanol (disinfectant alcohol) should be used. No additional water needs to be added.
